What Is The Process Of Injection Molding?

An injection molding machine consists of three main parts: the injection unit, the mold – the heart of the entire process – and the clamping/ejector unit.

The main function of the injection unit is to heat the raw plastic and direct it into the mold. It includes the feeder, the container, and the moving screw. The pelletized raw plastic material is put into the hopper, where it can be blended with pigments or additives like glass fibers. This enables the customization of molded parts' color and physical characteristics for particular uses.

After that, the substance is inserted into the cylinder that houses the back-and-forth screw. The screw has two purposes: pushing the pellets towards the mold and squeezing them. The movement of the screw creates shear forces that provide 60% to 90% of the heat needed to melt the plastic pellets, while the heater bands around the barrel supply the rest.

When a sufficient amount of molten plastic gathers in front of the screw, the ram moves forward and pushes the material into the vacant space of the mold, resembling a syringe. This whole procedure runs nonstop, with the mold being filled in just a matter of seconds.

Convectional Injection Molding:

Molten plastic is injected into a mold cavity under high pressure, making it ideal for producing a wide range of plastic parts with complex shapes and precise details.

Two-shot or multi-shot injection molding:

Insert Molding:

It merges plastic injection molding with inserting pre-formed components into the mold cavity, like metal inserts or other plastic parts. The inserts are encapsulated by the molten plastic material while being molded, resulting in a secure connection between the insert and the plastic part.

Overmolding:

It resembles insert molding, except it includes molding an additional layer of plastic material on top of a preexisting part or substrate. This method frequently includes a smooth-feel handle, enhances visual appeal, or boosts  performance.
