Introduction:
Mr. Haskell of FroYo Bites approached us to manufacture a silicone mold with a unique design in mind, i.e., an inverted ice-cream swirl. He had approached many other manufacturers for the same but was rejected due to the design's complexity and tooling issues.
Approach:
Krishani’s take to this project was quite different from the rest. Our team of designers and engineers started by drawing a CAD design since Mr. Haskell only had a vague image in mind.
Then, we began by understanding the part application and capturing the important functional dimensions which included:
- The design required molding in all negative angles
- Difficulty of designing the core and cavity
- Wall thickness of the silicone mold was to be maintained between 0.8 to 1mm only
After thorough discussions and multiple alterations, with client’s approval on the drawing we started with the development process.
Product Development Strategy:
The project challenges were tackled efficiently by our engineering team by first making a prototype of a single-cavity mold.
Multiple Modifications were made before we finalized the end design, which was approved by the client and finally, we proceeded with the development of the 171 cavity production mold.
Because of the design limitations, the core inserts were machined in 4 steps to get the required profile and the Cavity inserts were made in parts, then machined and bolted to make the final cavity.
Also, we took extra care to place the gates at the right spot and made sure the molding parameters were right to avoid any molding errors from occurring. Though it was a complex project, we are proud to say that we were able to make the desired silicone mold as per his dream design which all other companies refused to do.
